I’ve never given Can’s album, Tago Mago, a proper listen. However, that was rectified over the weekend when the wife suggested that we give it a listen while we hung out in the lounge. Of course, me being me, tried to go one better and I put together a list of albums that also contained one each from bands that are similar in some way to Can. Here is the playlist I put together on Spotify – http://open.spotify.com/user/toxicmusic79/playlist/76xJALdw4Md33veFrixgg4

The Shape Of Punk To Come

The Shape Of Punk To Come, by Swedish band Refused, completely passed me by when it was originally released , however I gave it a listen recently and was completely blown away by the unique sound. Check it out, still sounds as fresh today as it did in 1998.

Track listing:

  1. Worms of the Senses / Faculties of the Skull
  2. Liberation Frequency
  3. The Deadly Rhythm
  4. Summerholidays Vs. Punkroutine
  5. Bruitist Pome #5
  6. New Noise
  7. The Refused Party Program
  8. Protest Song ’68
  9. Refused Are Fucking Dead
  10. The Shape of Punk to Come
  11. Tannhäuser / Derivè
  12. The Apollo Programme Was a Hoax

Githead – Landing

Posted in Dub, Experimental Rock, Pop, Post-punk, Shoegaze by newmusicexcess on January 7, 2010

333

Track listing:

1. Faster
2. Take Off
3. Before Tomorrow
4. Landing
5. Ride
6. Over The Limit
7. Lightswimmer
8. From My Perspective
9. Displacement & Time
10. Transmission Tower

Landing by Githead is a melding of music into a smooth, steady reliable delivery. With drums and bass providing the solid framework over which the guitars can layer their melodic chimes and accents, atop this rides the almost dispassionate vocals. After several listens it certainly makes me want to check out the record collection for My Bloody Valentine, Lush, Curve, Ride, Stereolab, Bolshoi and a bit of Wire.

OOIOO – Armonico Hewa

Posted in Experimental Rock, Japanoise by newmusicexcess on December 31, 2009

 OOIOO_-_Armonica_Hewa

Track listing:

1. SOL
2. Uda Hah
3. Irorun
4. Konjo
5. Ulda
6. Polacca
7. Kipepeo
8. O O I A H
9. Nin Na Yama
10. Hewa Hewa
11. Agacim
12. Orokai
13. Honki Ponki

Armonico Hewa is OOIOO’s sixth album of experimental rock. Once again the band have dug out the genre blender and circuit bent the controls. A hyperactive melding of progressive arrangements, ethnic rhythms, punk, noise and ADHD. If this is your brain on music then it’s just been stewed, but it’s a tasty stew!

Slaraffenland – We’re On Your Side

Posted in Chamber Pop, Experimental Rock, Jazz Fusion, Noise Pop, Post-rock by newmusicexcess on December 18, 2009

Slaraffenland - We're On Your Side

Track listing:

1. Long Gone
2. Meet And Greet
3. Too Late To Think
4. Stars And Smiles
5. The Right Place
6. Haunting
7. Falling Out
8. Postcard
9. Open Your Eyes
10. Away

The happy-go-lucky, We’re On Your Side, is Slaraffenland‘s third album. Experimental style-blender pop with a sprinkling of horns, woodwinds and other subtle embellishments allows you to both drift off and uplift leaving you in a ponderous and joyful mind space.
