Shearwater - Rook

I was trawling through some Magic: The Gathering videos for some inspiration for another blog that I have just started, when I noticed that one of the tracks used as ‘music backing’ was Rook by Shearwater. As a result I have been listening to the album on Spotify.

Track listing:

  • On the Death of the Waters
  • Rooks
  • Leviathan, Bound
  • Home Life
  • Lost Boys
  • Century Eyes
  • I Was a Cloud
  • South Col
  • The Snow Leopard
  • The Hunter’s Star

I then put the band name through a similar artists look-up via and then looking the results up in AllMusic to get suggestions for key albums:

EMF - Stigma

When I was searching yesterday for some Tom Jones video’s for my post, I noticed that he often covered EMF’s hit Unbelievable during his live shows. At one point they actually played together on a music show. So that got me thinking about EMF, the second album Stigma (which was way darker sounding than the debut), and similar artists that were around at that time and I ended up putting together one of my similar artists playlists, the process for which I documented on an earlier “Similar Artists To” posts. Here is the album list I ended up with:

  • EMF – Stigma
  • Jesus Jones – Liquidizer
  • Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine – 1992: The Love Album
  • Ned’s Atomic Dustbin – Brain Blood Volume
  • Pop Will Eat Itself – This Is The Day…
  • The Farm – Spartacus
  • The Soup Dragons – Hang-Tent
  • The Wonder Stuff – Never Loved Elvis
  • The Shamen – En-Tact
  • Inspiral Carpets – Life

Well, I suppose I hade better post that EMF/Tom Jones performance, seeing as I mentioned it. In case you are wondering the track Unbelievable (the bands big hit) appeared on EMF’s first album, Schubert Dip.

Sitting down to breakfast this morning with my wife, I started up a conversation about favourite songs with cats in the title, as you do. It sort of came about following some late night listening, this week, of Al Stewart’s excellent album Year Of The Cat.

  • All Cats Are Grey – The Cure
  • Cat Claw – The Kills
  • Cat Scratch Fever – Ted Nugent
  • Cool For Cats – Squeeze
  • Hell Cat – Scorpions
  • Look What The Cat Dragged In – Poison
  • Love Cats – The Cure
  • Phenomenal Cat – The Kinks
  • Stray Cat Strut – Stray Cats
  • What’s New Pussycat – Tom Jones
  • Wild Cats 0f Kilkenny – The Pogues
  • Wild Catz – Tygers Of Pan Tang
  • Year Of The Cat – Al Stewart
  • Yellow Cat (Slash) Red Cat – Say Anything

Of course, some of these were released as singles. So lets se what we can find on YouTube with regard to promo videos and performances.

My Favourite Top Of The Pops Appearances – #1

Posted in List by newmusicexcess on March 24, 2010

As a young person growing up in the UK during the 70s, Top Of The Pops was an institution. The discussion at school the next day would often involve talking about what had been show on Top Of The Pops a previous evening. Here are some of my favourite appearances.

Queen – Killer Queen

Jilted John – Jilted John

Sham 69 – Hurry Up Harry

The Ruts – Babylon’s Burning

The Skids – Into The Valley

I could go on…but I might save that for another post.
