Terrorizer – All The Nines – August 2010
Another magazine whose subscription I have let run out is Terrorizer. My intention is to now buy just the specials and the issues containing the Writers/Readers polls, as the international subscription to Canada is a bit pricey and with so many of the extreme magazines now seeming to run the same bands and features every month, it makes more sense just to pick up a monthly copy of Decibel.
So, here is the Album Of The Month* and a list of albums that got 9 or above in Terrorizer’s August 2010 Issue (199):
- Winterfylleth – The Mercian Sphere [Candlelight]* – http://open.spotify.com/album/5pTIHz2ACqxuOQ9cT3veck
- Ufomammut – Eve [Supernatural Cat] –
- Various Artists – This Comp Kills Fascists Vol 2 [Relapse]
Decibel – August 2010 – All The Nines
I’ve just been going through this month’s copy of Decibel, my last one through the mail, as my subscription has just run out and I will probably just pick it up from a local newsstand. Here’s a run down of this months new albums that score 9 or more in the review section:
- Decrepit Birth – Polarity [Nuclear Blast]
- Coliseum – House With A Curse [Temporary Residence]
- Danzig – Deth Red Sabaoth [Evilive/The End]
- Fistula – Goat [Crucial Blast] – http://open.spotify.com/album/0ajv8XGXN5g3e0mqAPDaUg
- Khoma – A Final Storm [Selective Notes/Razzia] – http://open.spotify.com/album/44ynXO8PH6WvIxwoRMlZX8
- Thou – Summit [Gilead Media]
Sadly only a couple of these have turned up on Spotify, so far. I’ve just been checking out Kohma’s, A Final Storm, which is excellent.
Rocksound – July 2010 – All The Nines
As another issue (137) of Rocksound lands in the mailbox, it’s time to see which of the new albums reviewed in this issue get a score of 9 or above:
- Circa Survive – Blue Sky Noise (Atlantic)
- Devil Sold His Soul – Blessed & Cursed (Century Media) – http://open.spotify.com/album/6c2Y19Ur1miqU4khkFScrI
- Parkway Drive – Deep Blue (Epitaph) – http://open.spotify.com/album/7tIkp4pbeKvrNOYGEQriZP
- Out Of Sight – Where Do We Go From Here (Slam Dunk) – http://open.spotify.com/album/5DHvAn2OJgd3U0WSQEdZN2
Four very different albums by four very different bands. My favourite? Well that’s got to be Blessed & Cured by Devil Sold His Soul. Well, they are from the South East of England, my old stomping ground. Check ‘em out.

The Agony Of A Best Of List
It’s Thursday, and that’s the day it’s customary to do a “Best Of List” on the blog.
So, searching for inspiration I asked my wife for a suggestion as to what I should do, “What about your favourite guitar solos”, she said. “Hey, what a great idea”, was my response. I then suggested that it would not include tracks that were essentially just solos from start to finish, like “Eruption”, for instance. It had to be essentially a list of songs which contained solos that made my hair stand on end.
Anyway, in the course of reacquainting myself with various solos from some of my favourite guitarists, I noticed one of the cats, the evil Gigi, was responding to certain things I was listening to. Well, in-between thinking up acts of unspeakable evil to perform during the course of the day, no doubt.
However, my scientific studies were somewhat scuppered when she failed to respond later in the testing by basically falling asleep, a slumber from which no amount of Whitehouse’s “Total Sex” was able to wake her.
Anyway, here’s what has caused a ‘positive’ response thus far:
- Iron Maiden – The Ides Of March/Wrathchild
- Pantera – Fucking Hostile
- Morbid Angel – Blessed Are The Sick – Leading The Rats

Oh well, back to my list of 10 songs containing favourite guitar solos then, although for the first one I have to take Gigi’s lead:
- Iron Maiden – The Ides Of March/Wrathchild
- UFO – Rock Bottom (live)
- Thin Lizzy – Still In Love With You (live)
- Arch Enemy – The Last Enemy
- Lamb Of God – Set To Fail
- Pantera – Domination
- Rainbow – Stargazer
- Ozzy Osbourne – Mr Crowley
- Rage Against The Machine – Killing In The Name
- Judas Priest – Painkiller
