.Playlists – Created using ‘The Method’

A while back, I came up with a procedure for generating playlists of similar artists, using and The original post is here, along with some comments which contain a couple of  lists a reader of the blog kindly posted.

This is now affectionately know as ‘the method’, the procedure for which is as follows:

1. Pick a band.

2. Enter the band at and go to the band’s page.

3. Click on the Similar Artists ‘tab’ and make a note of the first 9 bands on the list.

4. Take this list, including the original band you picked, and for each band in turn use to find the first release that has the highest score on their album reviews.

5. This will give you a final list of 10 albums, one from each band, which you can track down and enjoy.

Another interesting twist, if you have a service like Spotify, is to generate a list of albums that are listed in the service, this obviously takes a bit longer as you have to keep going until you find 10 bands, unless you just limit it to just the ones you can find from your original “similar artists” list.

Once you have generated them, why not post the playlists here, as comments, along with any Spotify playlist links.   I’ve therefore opened up this page for comments.

I was listening to Ted Nugent – Ted Nugent while out walking a couple of days ago and when I got back I was inspired to creat the following album playlist:

Ted Nugent – Cat Scratch Fever
Foghat – Fool For The City
    Sammy Hagar – Standing Hampton
    Montrose – Montrose
    Mountain – Climbing
    Blackfoot – Strikes
    Triumph – Just A Game
The Amboy Dukes – The Amboy Dukes

Here is the link to what Spotify had from the above –

I was reading an interview with Thomas Gabriel Fischer about his new band Triptykon. In the interview he mentions an Irish Black Metal band, Alter Of Plagues. The interview inspired me to create two playlists. One for Celtic Frost and one for Alter Of Plagues.

Celtic Frost – Into The Pandemonium
    Hellhammer – Demon Entrails
    Venom – Black Metal
    Sarcofago – Laws Of Scourge
Darkthrone – A Blaze In The Northern Sky
    Possessed – Seven Churches
Bathory – Under The Sign Of The Black Mark
Aura Noir – Black Thrash Attack
    Sodom – Persecution Mania
    Coroner – Mental Vortex

For the list starting with Altar Of Plagues it was a lot harder to find entries, or ratings, on AllMusic, so I had to make my own album selections for some.

Altar Of Plagues – White Tomb
Wolves In The Throne Room – Two Hunters
    Skagos – Ast
    Fen – The Malediction Fields
    Cobalt – War Metal
    Lontlos – Lantlos
    Krallice – Dimensional Bleedthrough
    Wodensthrone – Loss
A Forest Of Stars – A Corpse Of Rebirth
    Enmerkar – Starlit Passage

Only just noticed you’d created a separate page entry for ‘the method’, so I’m going to give the above playlists the Spotify treatment over the weekend.

Since my last playlist was created for the Eyehategod gig I attended, I thought I’d post one for Cathedral, who I saw last Friday in Glasgow. Since I’m using Spotify, I made some slight changes to the rules to get a full ten-album playlist based on what’s available on their service, as you too have suggested above.

So, here it is, my “New Music Excess: Cathedral” playlist:

    1. Cathedral – The Ethereal Mirror
    2. Saint Vitus – Born Too Late
    3. Trouble – Trouble
    4. Reverend Bizarre – Harbinger Of Metal
    5. Grand Magus – Iron Will
    6. Witchfinder General – Death Penalty
    7. Candlemass – Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
    8. Pentagram – Be Forewarned
    9. Solitude Aeturnus – Downfall
    10. High On Fire – Snakes For The Divine

As a challenge for myself, I decided to do 100 albums instead of the 10 albums you suggested, here is a snippet of this:
    10. Pestilence- Consuming Impulse
    9. Dismember- Like an Everflowing Stream
    8. At The Gates- The Red in the Sky is Ours
    7. Asphyx- The Rack
    6. Deicide- Legion
    5. Atrocity- Hallucinations
    4. Obituary- Cause Of Death
    3. Disincarnate- Dreams of the Carrion King
    2. Death- Leprosy
    1. Gorguts- Considered Dead
