I’ve never given Can’s album, Tago Mago, a proper listen. However, that was rectified over the weekend when the wife suggested that we give it a listen while we hung out in the lounge. Of course, me being me, tried to go one better and I put together a list of albums that also contained one each from bands that are similar in some way to Can. Here is the playlist I put together on Spotify – http://open.spotify.com/user/toxicmusic79/playlist/76xJALdw4Md33veFrixgg4

RetroBlog: Fish – 13th Star
I was listening to Planet Rock on their website, and they played a track by Fish from his 2008 album, 13th Star. Fish is an artist who I have not listened to, well, not since he split from the other members of Marillion in 1988. So, after hearing the track I went over to Spotify and listened to the whole album, and was suitably impressed. Definitely well worth checking out. http://open.spotify.com/album/2M15NVl6YyjpS7wUPjKsFX

After posting Classic Rock’s – 10 Essential 00s Prog Albums a few days ago, I was trying to remember where I had seen a 70s prog list other than one I had posted a couple of months ago. Music Lists: Progressive Rock Albums
I was looking through my little black book of lists and found an interesting Prog Rock list that I wrote down several years ago. I am not too sure where the list came from, but, I think it was from a UK extreme music magazine. I think it works quite well as a broad introduction as there are a wide range of styles included in the list. Although, it is definitely focused on 70’s albums. Here is the list:
- King Crimson – Red (1974)
- Yes – Close To The Edge (1972)
- Rush – A Farewell To Kings (1977)
- Jethro Tull – Thick As A Brick (1972)
- Van Der Graaf Generator – Pawn Hearts (1971)
- Soft Machine – Third (1970)
- Genesis – Foxtrot (1972)
- Atomic Rooster – Death Walks Behind You (1970)
- Pink Floyd – Meddle (1971)
- Hawkwind – Space Ritual (1973)
Ahleuchatistas – Of the Body Prone
1. 2/3 Consensus On The Un-Finite Possibilities
2. Owls
3. Those With Guns
4. Why Can’t We Be In Jamaica?
5. Racing Towards The Hard Kernel
6. Eastside Uptight
7. Dancing With The Stars
8. Total Nightmare In A Deep Dive
9. Making The Most Of The Apocalypse
10. Map’s Tattered Edges
On Of The Body Prone there seems me to be a seamless switching between chaos and order, between the melodic and the unmelodic, and between the simple and the complex. Ahleuchatistas set unsolvable math problems to music and you don’t know where they could take you.
