I’ve never given Can’s album, Tago Mago, a proper listen. However, that was rectified over the weekend when the wife suggested that we give it a listen while we hung out in the lounge. Of course, me being me, tried to go one better and I put together a list of albums that also contained one each from bands that are similar in some way to Can. Here is the playlist I put together on Spotify – http://open.spotify.com/user/toxicmusic79/playlist/76xJALdw4Md33veFrixgg4

Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Progressive Rock by newmusicexcess on June 4, 2010

Rush

Especially owing to my current status as a probationary Canadian, it’s good to see one of the ‘local’ bands getting the recognition that they deserve. http://www.alliancefilms.com/en/89/details/display/12402/

Plus, I love Rush. I’ve loved them since a friend played me 2112 way back in the ‘70s.

I know I will be checking out this movie when it comes to Halifax (Nova Scotia) next weekend, for a 2 night run at the Empire. http://www.empiretheatres.com/movie/rush-beyond-lighted-stage

For those unfamiliar with the band, just the following list of studio albums will give some idea of their longevity:

  • Rush (1974)
  • Fly by Night (1975)
  • Caress of Steel (1975)
  • 2112 (1976)
  • A Farewell to Kings (1977)
  • Hemispheres (1978)
  • Permanent Waves (1980)
  • Moving Pictures (1981)
  • Signals (1982)
  • Grace Under Pressure (1984)
  • Power Windows (1985)
  • Hold Your Fire (1987)
  • Presto (1989)
  • Roll the Bones (1991)
  • Counterparts (1993)
  • Test for Echo (1996)
  • Vapor Trails (2002)
  • Snakes & Arrows (2007)
  • Clockwork Angels (2011)

Here is a super-play list of the 18 released studio albums care of Spotify – http://open.spotify.com/user/toxicmusic79/playlist/33s6jyepkX23qfqLI5jfRi

And, for you young tykes, here is a list of more ‘recent’ similar artists (well they have been going a while):

  • Dream Theater
  • Spock’s Beard
  • Marillion
  • Porcupine Tree
  • Transatlantic
  • The Flower Kings
  • King’s X

RetroBlog: Fish – 13th Star

Fish - 13th Star

I was listening to Planet Rock on their website, and they played a track by Fish from his 2008 album, 13th Star. Fish is an artist who I have not listened to, well, not since he split from the other members of Marillion in 1988. So, after hearing the track I went over to Spotify and listened to the whole album, and was suitably impressed. Definitely well worth checking out. http://open.spotify.com/album/2M15NVl6YyjpS7wUPjKsFX

Track listing:

  1. Circle Line
  2. Square Go
  3. Miles de Besos

The Nice - The Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack

After posting Classic Rock’s – 10 Essential 00s Prog Albums a few days ago, I was trying to remember where I had seen a 70s prog list other than one I had posted a couple of months ago. I finally found it in my little black book of music lists which I have close to me at all times, well there are a lot of lists in there. This list came from a Prog Special that Terrorizer did some years ago and it only focuses on ‘70s prog. Here’s the list:

Music Lists: Progressive Rock Albums

Death Walks Behind You

I was looking through my little black book of lists and found an interesting Prog Rock list that I wrote down several years ago. I am not too sure where the list came from, but, I think it was from a UK extreme music magazine. I think it works quite well as a broad introduction as there are a wide range of styles included in the list. Although, it is definitely focused on 70’s albums. Here is the list:

  • King Crimson – Red (1974)
  • Yes – Close To The Edge (1972)
  • Rush – A Farewell To Kings (1977)
  • Jethro Tull – Thick As A Brick (1972)
  • Van Der Graaf Generator – Pawn Hearts (1971)
  • Soft Machine – Third (1970)
  • Genesis – Foxtrot (1972)
  • Atomic Rooster – Death Walks Behind You (1970)
  • Pink Floyd – Meddle (1971)
  • Hawkwind – Space Ritual (1973)

Within the progressive music of Orphaned Land both Middle Eastern and Western sounds and textures meld together effortlessly. Sit down comfortably, put on the headphones, close your eyes and take a journey to exotic lands. Ahh, I can smell the campfires already.

All hail the progressive ‘shred’!!!

Ahleuchatistas – Of the Body Prone

Posted in Avant-garde, Avant-prog, Jazz, Math Rock, Progressive Rock by newmusicexcess on January 5, 2010

cover_594404102009 Track listing

1. 2/3 Consensus On The Un-Finite Possibilities
2. Owls
3. Those With Guns
4. Why Can’t We Be In Jamaica?
5. Racing Towards The Hard Kernel
6. Eastside Uptight
7. Dancing With The Stars
8. Total Nightmare In A Deep Dive
9. Making The Most Of The Apocalypse
10. Map’s Tattered Edges

On Of The Body Prone there seems me to be a seamless switching between chaos and order, between the melodic and the unmelodic, and between the simple and the complex. Ahleuchatistas set unsolvable math problems to music and you don’t know where they could take you.
