Throbbing Gristle – Persuasion (Live)

Posted in Avant-garde, Dark Ambient, Experimental, Industrial, Noise, Performance Art by newmusicexcess on April 1, 2010

I was having a look on YouTube this morning and found this video posting, and I thought, “my good friend Chris might like this”. So, this one is for you, Chris.

I then fed the band through one of my ‘patent pending’ listening suggestion procedures and, voila.

So, here is the list I ended up with. It seems that some of the choices are the slightly more accessible releases by the bands in question, but some are not.

  • Throbbing Gristle – 20 Jazz Funk Greats
  • Psychic TV – Force The Hand Of Chance
  • SPK – Machine Age Voodoo
  • Coil – Love’s Secret Domain
  • Monte Cazazza – Power vs. Wisdom
  • Nurse With Wound – Chance Meeting
  • NON – Pagan Musak
  • Whitehouse – Erector
  • Cabaret Voltaire – Red Mecca
  • Test Dept. – Beating the Retreat

Noticing that Coil had made the list I could not help but track down their chilling rendition/video of Tainted Love.

And don’t forget SPK’s metal-bashing performance of Metal Dance on The Tube.

I suppose it’s time to Force The Hand Of Chance with another Message From Thee Temple.

Live – Owen Pallett / Final Fantasy

Posted in Baroque pop, Experimental, Indie Pop by newmusicexcess on February 12, 2010

Owen Pallett, aka Final Fantasy, played last night at St. Matthew’s Church, Halifax, Nova Scotia. I was there with my family and was also able to record some clips of the performance using my recently purchased Flip UltraHD. Here is one of the clips that I’ve so far uploaded to YouTube.

Sole And The Skyrider Band – Plastique

Posted in Abstract Hip-Hop, Alternative Hip-Hip, Electronic Music, Experimental, Glitch by newmusicexcess on December 30, 2009

plastiquecover-web-300x300 Track listing:

1. Children of Privilege
2. Battlefields feat Markus Acher of The Notwist
3. Longshots
4. Nothing Pt 2
5. More
6. Pissing In The Wind
7. Bait
8. Mr Insurgent
9. Black

Plastique, the follow up to Sole And The Skyrider band’s self titled debut, is chock full of irreverent reflections on the postmodern ‘me’ pop culture. The old-school hip-hop structures are augmented with the use of a live band using heavy break beats and awesome riffs. The album is bleak but sufficiently cathartic not to leave you in ‘all hope is lost’ state of mind.
